AFTER being crowned Rock Challenge Northern Premier Champions in Grimsby last month Peterhead Academy’s Rock Challenge Team travelled more than 500 miles to Milton Keynes to compete in the National Final of the competition.

This is only the second time Rock Challenge has held a National Final with the top ten schools from the North and South regions competing against each other.

The 67 pupils from Peterhead wowed the audience and judges with their performance of ‘SOUTH’ and were awarded overall fourth place along with The Be Your Best Award for Stage Crew; The Be Your Best Award for Set Design and The Rock Challenge Award for Positive Inclusion.

Commenting on the event, Emma Marshall, liaison teacher with Rock Challenge, told the Buchanie: “The atmosphere at Milton Keynes was amazing.

“For the first time in a long time in Rock Challenge, it really didn’t seem to matter to anyone who won, Everyone was just excited to be there and be involved in such a fantastic day.

“When the school was first asked to perform in Milton Keynes it was thought we were going to have to say no because of the event being held during the school holidays.

“However, the group rallied together and adapted the routine due to some pupils being away. Some families even changed their holiday plans so that they could make the final.”

The other big hurdle to attending was the £9,000 needed to fund the trip. The group has expressed thanks to the whole community for supporting them in such a fantastic fundraising effort.

In particular, thanks were given to the following companies and organisations who donated goods and money: Buchan Embroidery; TOTAL; Murdoch Allan; Symposium; Apex Church; Peterhead JogScotland; Stepping Stones Nursery; Glow; Peterhead Academy; Petrofac; Aquatic; Peterehad Harbour Masters; Red Brick Theatre Group; ASCO Group Ltd.

A special thank you was also given to the lady who anonymously handed in a cash donation to the school after reading about their story in The Buchanie.

“She said she had no involvement in the group or the school, but was so pleased to see such a positive thing happening for Peterhead and the children in particular that she wanted to help,” said Emma.

The group’s fundraising now continues as its build its funds back up so that it can start work on its 2013 entry for the competition.

Auditions for Peterhead Academy pupils interested in dancing in the 2013 team will be held on Monday, August 27.
