McCann, who has trying to cement a place in the starting 11, deputised at left back in the 1-1 draw against Berwick Rangers.

Although naturally a central midfielder, the 32-year-old from Blantyre, was pushed further up the field to compensate for David Cox’s departure.

He said: “Firstly I’m happy to play anywhere if it benefits the team. I’ve always been that way, that’s why at each club I’ve been to I’ve been the guy who does that. It’s good that I can play a number of positions but there’s also that wee itch to get into the middle.

“But as long as the team’s doing well, that’s the important thing.”

When quized on the form of his team however McCann said he did not believe Peterhead ever deserved to be favourites. He said: “We were tipped to be favourites but I never thought we deserved to be - if you recall back to five or six weeks before the season finished, five or six teams could have come second.

“Fortunately we had a good run and we finished second but that doesn’t necessarily make us favourites.

“I think there are four or five teams who are are equally good as us, for us it’s about fnding that form we had last year.

“And we will - I just hope that this is our dip in form. We can certainy play much better than we have done over the past few weeks.”

With Cox out for at least six weeks and with both Ryan Strachan and Scott Ross absent from the centre of defence, McCann has the opportunity to repay the trust Jim McInally has shown in him.

“It’s always good to start. I’d like to get a chance to go an play centrally but since I’ve been here we’ve been hit by injuries and boys getting suspended.

“Fortunately I feel the manager trusts me to go and fill in out wide but I feel I’m strongest and can certainly offer more in the central area.”
