A fun environment at out of school care club
A NEW out of school care club has been established in Peterhead offering parents morning and afternoon care for their children.
Clever Clogs (CCs) Out of School Care is based in the town’s Wilson Street in the former Rock School building, and presently caters for 16 children.
Manager and development officer, Andy Brown, told the Buchanie that the club was established just over three months ago to cater for a gap in the market for after school care.
“We service all primary schools in the Peterhead area and we offer a breakfast club and an after school facility,” he said.
“We currently have seven or eight children for the morning session and we drop them off at school and then they return after school until they are picked up by their parents.
“The club provides parents with a secure environment in which to leave their children while we are also templated to the new Curriculum for Excellence.
“I myself have an educational background and we do themes every month and provide the children with lots of different activities.
“Last month our theme was Scotland to tie in with Burns night, while during February the theme is animals and in March it will be TV and films.
“We work closely with the schools and the local library and we have a homework club and a library club for the children.”
Andy said the club was very health conscious and community proactive and was working closely with Peterhead Projects and making links with other community groups.
“We are getting the kids involved in the community as well,” he said.
CCs is part of Clever Tots Nursery and Andy said there was a definite need for an out of school care facility in the area.
“We identified the need for such a club as there is something like 3.000 primary school children and I am aware there is only one other after school care club in town besides ourselves,” he said.
“Our main strength is that we are open all year round including snow days and holidays. The only days we close are Christmas and Boxing Day and New Year and January 2.
“The club is open from 6.30am to 9am and from 3pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday, although we do understand that some parents have to travel back from Aberdeen so we give them some extra time to include that,” said Andy.
Children from five years to 12 years can attend the club, although CCs is now looking at extending the age limit to include first year academy pupils.
The club is registered for 24 children, with 16 currently on the books and there are both full-time and part-time places available.
There are two staff members - Andy and playworker Danielle Gibson - who entertain the children in the different rooms throughout the building.
“We have a homework room, a building room, an art room and a computer room. There is also a well-equipped kitchen and a dining area for the children,” said Andy.
Andy added that the club was presently working with SVO and Careers Scotland and Aberdeenshire Voluntary Partnership to encourage young people in work experience.
