Ladies rugby could be revived in Peterhead

A meeting is being held in Peterhead this week with a view to starting a ladies rugby team in the Blue Toon.

The meeting will be held at the Albert Hotel this Wednesday (February 15) at 7pm.

Peterhead briefly had a womens rugby team over 20 years ago but the side did not last.

Ann Ruthven, who was part of that team, is now looking to get women’s rugby up and running in the town again.

Speaking to The Buchanie, she said: “I have been away and spent a few years involved with Kirkcaldy Rugby club where I played for their ladies team.

“Having moved back to Aberdeenshire I was asked by the club about helping set up a ladies team in Peterhead and, in conjunction with Laura Cook who currently trains with Aberdeen University women’s team, we are looking to set up a local team with support from Peterhead’s president, Mike Reeves, and coach, Neil Davidson.”

Ann’s father, Alan Ruthven, was a founding member of Peterhead Rugby Club so she is more than familiar with the set up at Catto Park.

Now, Ann is hoping that she, like her father, can be the driving force behind getting a team started in Peterhead.

She said: “The meeting is for any women who would love to give it a go no matter what age, experience or fitness level. Please come along.

“Women’s Rugby is a great way to have fun, get fit and make new friends.

“After the meeting there will be a chance to go down and see the guys training and get an idea of the sort of training we will be doing and a chance to meet some of the men’s team and coaches.

“You never know, we might even find the next Jade Konkel or Heather Lockhart right here in Peterhead.”

Womens rugby is amongst the fastest growing sports in the country with this season’s Womens Six Nations, running alongside the men’s competition, being broadcast live on Sky Sports and Eurosport.

Scotland have struggled in the Women’s Six Nations in recent years, finish bottom of the table in the last three competitions, but a growth in interest at local level could soon see fortunes change.
