At a time when Pro - Am’s around the country are winding down, the McDonald Golf Club, Ellon event is set to get bigger and better, thanks to the efforts of club officials, headed up by Colin Grant, a former captain at the 89 year old club.

“We decided that next Friday’s event could do with a makeover, and have accordingly gone out of our way to involve club members in the run up to the event.

“This took the form of a dinner on April 1, and this Saturday we are holding an auction at which members can bid to buy a team who will be playing on July 29.” Said Colin who has presided over eight meetings in the build up to the 28th running of the area’s longest running Pro - Am.

He has also been able to give the day a unique edge, as for the first time in the history of Pro - Am’s a one armed team will participate, headed up by club member Bill Boyes.

‘’We are absolutely delighted to welcome Bill’s team. It is a welcome addition to the day,’’ said Colin.

Joining Bill on the tee at 2.05 on July 29 will be Malcolm Guy from Oldmeldrum Golf Club, and Jim Darragh from Cathcart Golf Club. ‘’We look forward to playing a supporting role to Robert Arnott the professional from Bishopriggs Driving Range, but hope to make contributions of our own. Most of all we’ll be happy to get round, and walking up the 18th fairway will be special for us all,’’ said Bill.

The team will be representing the Scottish Association of One Armed Golfers who was formed in 1932 and has a track record of involvement at the Ellon club, having held its championship there in 2011.

The Scottish PGA confirmed that the participation of a one armed team was a first in the history of Pro - Am golf in Scotland. ‘’The PGA and its members have always tried to work in whatever way to bring opportunity for everyone who engages with golf to get maximum enjoyment. It is a testament to Bill Boyes and his team that they have overcome adversity to participate in the sport.’’ said Shona Malcolm, the PGA secretary in Scotland.
