On Saturday,March 12, James Wilson and Barry McGee, members of Peterhead Jogscotland and Peterhead Athletics Club travelled down to Innerleithen in the Borders to take part in the Ratrace Mighty Deerstalker night time hill race, the biggest night time hill race in the UK.

This event is self-described as probably the hardest off-road-Tweed-clad-pipe-lit-plus-four-and-headtorch-wearing run that exists.

A total of 2,500 runners started in five waves at dusk. Overhead conditions were perfect with just a crescent moon, but underfoot it was a concoction of ankle-deep muddy fields, forest tracks, scree and roads.

James and Barry also ended up in the river Tweed five times up to their waists.

The run is an unspecified distance but satnav watches said they had completed 15k at the finish.

There was some fun to be had on the course trying to negotiate balance beams near the summit of the first hill and a mobile disco deep in the woods complete with smoke machine, lights and lasers.

The course also involved scaling two, 330m hills which were bathed in the light from the competitors head torches forming two gigantic rings giving an aura of something from a Stephen Spielberg movie.

The final obstacle was a 150ft water slide into the finish area to collect their medal, t-shirt and an ice-cold beer.

James and Barry both travelled straight back home as Barry was competing in the Inverness Half Marathon the next day Sunday which he completed in a very respectable time of 1hr 52mins.

Barry and James are not daunted by the experience and are looking forward to Ratrace Mighty Deerstalker on March 11, 2017.

Meantime a members from Jogcotland and Peterhead athletics club joined Barry at Inverness with many achieving personal best times while Leigh Strachan of Peterhead AC was third in her category in 01:31:54.

Anyone interested in getting active is welcome to join Jogscotland at Catto Park on a Monday or Wednesday at 6.30pm. The new term starts Monday April 18.
