Nightmare first half seals Hearts’ fate

Hearts welcomed Dalkeith Thistle to Raemoss Park in an Emirates Scottish Junior Cup first round tie.

The visitors nearly scored early on when a clearance saw Small hit the bar with a lob from 40 yards out with Bruce off his line.

Hearts should have taken the lead when Geddes made room for himself and picked out Ryan Duncan with a good cross but the striker headed wide from a good position.

Dalkeith took the lead when a cross from the right eluded Kris Keith and Hunter had an easy tap in. It got worse when Dalkeith scored again when they worked the ball down the right and Hunter headed home his second to make it 2-0.

Hearts had a chance when Ryan Duncan beat two men but shot straight at Coventry in the Thistle goal and the chance was lost.

The home side then conceded a third goal when a free kick from the right saw McNaughton head past Bruce with the Hearts defence standing still. Just on the half time Hearts pulled a goal back when Ryan Duncan scored after some slack defending frim thistle.

Hearts had it all to do in the second half, they started okay and Hart broke through and Coventry saved his shot at the second attempt. Then Scott Bruce pulled off a super save from a long range shot from Small.

Geddes then tried hard to get onto a Glendinning cross but Thistle cleared the danger. Hearts subbes Srainton with McLeod.

The game became towsy with a scuffle between Duncan and Hunter saw both players receive a warning.

Thistle were seeing out the game comfortably and made it 4-1 in 85mins when Pudleski took advantage to shoot into the corner and they added a fifth in 88 mins when Hunter shot home from a well offside position despite Hearts protests the goal stood.

Hearts gave Dalkeith Thistle the game when conceding three goals in the first half with woeful defending other than that 5-1 slightly flattered the visiting side.
