More welcome points for Longside

Longside travelled to play Sunnybank on Saturday in the Superleague and came away with another three valuable points.

The Davidson Park men are easing themselves away from the relegation zone after another fine win.

But it should have been more comfortable than it was, with two or three clear cut chances at the start of the second half which would have put the game to bed. Cardno was first to try a shot for Longside following a Porter corner but his effort went wide.

Bruce almost caught the keeper off guard when he tried a long range shot but Knowles managed to tip it over the bar for a corner.

The visitors had five or six corners as they went in search of the opening goal but the couldn’t make the breakthrough. Whyte had a glorious chance for Sunnybank when he ran onto a pass before taking the ball round the keeper but he drove his shot into the side netting. Whyte put Campbell clear for Longside with a superb pass but his shot was deflected for a corner, Bruce’s kick eventually landed for Usher but his shot was straight at Knowles. The home side had a soft claim for a penalty when Watson went down rather easily in the box. A Whyte overhead kick went well over the bar for Sunnybank, just before the break a Norris shot went narrowly wide. Minutes into the second half Longside were awarded a penalty after Usher was fouled just inside the box, Paul Campbell made no mistake smashing the ball into the net. Two minutes later they should have doubled their lead when Cardno got on the end of a Porter cross but his shot was brilliantly saved by Knowles.

Craik had a chance to score for Longside when he rose unmarked for a Bruce corner but he headed the ball wide. Stewart went on a solo run for Sunnybank and Norris knocked the ball clear. A Longside free kick in 62 minutes was headed down by Donaldson for Campbell again to lash the ball home.

Duffy came to the Longside rescue when he made a brilliant save to deny Allan Smith. Sunnybank pulled a goal back in 76 minutes when Beddie gave away a needless free kick just outside the box, Allan Smith gave Duffy no chance with a stunning free kick. Davidson replaced the injured Usher for Longside. This Saturday Longside travel to Aberdeen again to play FC Stoneywood in the Superleague (ko 2pm).
