One of darts biggest names paid a visit to the Blue Toon at the weekend for Peterhead Darts League’s annual prize-giving ceremony.
Robert “The Thorn” Thornton, currently ranked number eight in the world, delighted the crowds at Balmoor Stadium on Friday night with his exhibition darts.
Thornton, a former UK Open and 2015 World Gran-Prix winner from North Ayrshire said he thoroughly enjoys visiting different parts of Scotland.
He said: “The exhibitions are great fun, you don’t really care if you win or lose it just about having fun playing.
“These events are actually really helpful coming up to competitions, we don’t have an off season but there is no tournament in August so the players go about doing these sorts of exhibitions - it’s a fun way to get some practice in.
“There’s been plenty times playing in these events where you come up against guys from the local pub leagues who are very talented.
“Guys who have gone onto the BDO then the PDC and a lot of them don’t realise at the time that they are good enough to make it that far.
“There’s always one or two who catch you off guard so you have to watch out.”
Thornton certainly found some strong competition on the night, having played seven guests drawn at random he then faced 501 singles champion Stuart Duncan, 701 runner-up Lewis McPhee and Marc Lawrence all of whom managed to beat the professional.
Peterhead Darts League Chairman Sandy Garvock said: “It was a brilliant night with a great turn out - we had approximately 100 people in attendance.
“Robert was an absolute gentleman and had a great laugh and banter with the guests.
“He helped us out by donating a shirt, which he wore during a World Championship match, which we auctioned off to raise funds for the league.
“It was a great success and we’re already working on making next year even better.”
There was also a special presentation to former Peterhead Darts League chairman Gordon Willox who stepped down earlier this year after 25-years of service with the league.
