Longside get back on the winning trail

With neither host Longside nor visitors Dufftown having a chance of going any further in the competition this game was always going to be a bit flat.

The home side started well and should have been further ahead at the break but credit to Dufftown they came out fighting in the second half and were unlucky not to score.

Longside made the perfect start when they were awarded a penalty when Danton was brought down in the box, with Paul Campbell making no mistake from the spot.

Dufftown replied when they won a corner on the right, Stuart Lamberton’s kick was headed clear by Donaldson. At the other end Danton latched onto a through ball but his shot was saved by Sean McIntosh.

Dunn sent a high hopeful ball into the Longside penalty area but Thomson did well to claim it. Geddes took a return pass from Park before forcing keeper McIntosh into a fine save.

Callum Mcintosh weaved his way into the Longside penalty area before firing in a shot which was deflected for a corner which came to nothing. Campbell had a great chance to double Longside’s lead when Whyte nodded the ball into his path but he clipped it wide of the post.

The visitors went straight on the attack at the start of the second half and Callum McIntosh fired in a good cross which Thomson did well to save. Minutes later the same player saw his cross cleared off the line but only as far as Gerrie, his shot was saved by Thomson.

Geddes tried a shot for Longside from 25 yards but his effort went well over the bar. Paul Lamberton got to the line before finding Shearer in the middle but his shot drifted wide. Stuart Lamberton fired in a free kick but it went straight to Thomson.

Longside made two changes in quick succession with Ritchie replacing Bruce and then Butcher went on for Whyte. Butcher was quick to get into the game when he turned well before sending over a dangerous cross which McIntosh did well to save.

Siford strode forward for Dufftown before forcing Thomson to make a brilliant save to tip his shot over the bar, Stuart Lamberton’s corner was met by Gary Lamberton but he headed the ball wide. Danton had a great chance to score when Ritchie threaded the ball into him but he fired his shot wide. Longside finally added a second when Campbell fired home from eight yards after good work by Butcher.

Longside’s next game is on Friday night at home to Whitehills in the firstst round of the GA Engineering Inter Regional Cup (KO 6.45pm).
