Instructor Angie shortlisted for RYA award
An inspirational Peterhead sailing instructor has been shortlisted for a coveted national award.
Angie Fraser, a member of Peterhead Sailing Club, has been nominated for the Royal Yachting Association Scotland’s Instructor of the Year Award.
Also nominated for an award is 14-years-old Iona Helyer of the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust who is in the running for the Young Volunteer of the Year Award sponsored by Honda UK.
RYA winners will be revealed at an awards dinner on Saturday, February 1 at the Glasgow Science Centre.
Angie is the principle of Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust and also the secretary for the North and East Sailing Scotland RYA Scotland Sailing Development Group.
Inspirational, tireless, cheerful and hard-working arejust some of the words that were used to describe Angie and her commitment to the sport of sailing during the nomination process.
She offers a wide programme at Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust and encourages the whole family to participate in sailing, from starfish for youngsters to Launching Lassies formums who want to learn and also over 50s too.
RYA announced: “It seems that Angie’s love of sailing is infectious and is inspiring lots of people in the Aberdeenshire area to try sailing.”
Iona, meanwhile, has been doing a huge amount of volunteering for the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust for the past three seasons and has shown a great amount of enthusiasm and commitment to all aspects of sailing.
Her active involvement with the club activities as well as her own participation in club racing has seen lots of other young people engaging with the club and the sailing.
RYA said: “The nomination submitted for Iona said that she will volunteer in any way possible but mostly she helps with teaching and is a positive role model.
“She’s great as a lead boat often with stage 2/3 kids and is often seen hopping into any boat where participants are not having as good a time as they could be to help with their confidence. There isn’t much that Iona’s calmness and great sailing ability can’t sort out.”
The RYA Scotland Annual Awards are an extremely important event in the calendar and is a rare occasion where all levels and disciplines of the sport of sailing are brought together, from the young windsurfer to the older sailor cruising on the west coast.
