LONGSIDE had Ellon United as visitors on Saturday in the Superleague. The home put a good run together down the right and when the ball was played in to Davidson he found Wood but his shot went wide. Craib put over a good ball for Ellon but Thomson saved well.
Thomson slipped making a clearance and the ball fell to Walker who fired goalward but the keeper recovered well to make the save. A dangerous ball from Chapman was well taken under pressure by Thomson.
Longside were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Cowie fired the ball over the bar.
The home side opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Danton did well on the right before crossing for Morven Wood arriving in the box to head home from 12 yards. A Forsyth free kick for Ellon was headed clear by Craik.
Cowie beat the offside trap to put Davidson clear but Moffat raced from his goal to clear. Ellon drew level in 29 minutes when Ally Reid fired a shot from 25 yards that skidded past Thomson. A cross from Geddes was met by Danton but his shot was blocked before being gathered by Moffat.
A Forsyth corner broke for Reid but his shot was well saved by Thomson at the expense of another corner. Forsyth took the second corner and Bruce cleared the ball upfield for Longside. Ellon won a free kick just outside the box, Reid blasted the kick well over the bar.
Danton and Whyte combined on the right before Whyte saw his cross flash across the goals before going out for a goalkick. Cowie did well to put Danton clear but his shot was brilliantly saved by Moffat.
The home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, when they were about to take the kick Danton was shown a red card for an off the ball incident, Bruce’s goalbound strike was superbly saved by Moffat.
A Forsyth header was straight at Thomson and then a Gunn strike was deflected for a corner which Craik did well to head clear. Reid weaved his way into the Longside penalty area but Taylor did well to concede a corner, Forsyth’s kick was headed wide by Reid.
Longside made a change with Stainton replacing Porter. Corser had a shot from 15 yards but in went straight to Thomson. The visitors piled on the pressure in the closing stages but the ten men of Longside held out for a point.
Longside showed a bit more hunger this week but still face a huge challenge to get back up the table.
The sending off was definitely the turning point of the game and the player was hard done by, a yellow card would have been suffice. In the end a point each was probably about right.
This Saturday Longside are away to Hermes in the Superleague with a 2.30pm kick-off.
