Longside travelled to play Culter on Saturday in the First round of the North Regional Cup. The home side almost had the perfect start when McBain’s cross found McWilliam but he sent his free header straight at Thomson. Minutes later McBain got free on the left again but Whyte did enough to force the winger to shoot into the side netting.
Whyte had a half chance for Longside but he couldn’t get enough power in his shot and Farquhar saved easily. An Usher corner was headed clear from Panton as he looked set to score.
A Youngson free kick from just outside the box was blocked by the defensive wall before being cleared. Youngson picked up the ball again and his 20 yard shot went narrowly wide. Usher had a great chance for the visitors when he latched onto a short pass back but he pulled his shot wide.
A corner for Culter was met by Kelly but his header was cleared off the line by Beddie. Longside had another chance when Farquhar raced from his goals to clear and the ball broke to Usher 25 yards out and his shot clipped the bar before going out for a goalkick.
At the other end Wilson sent McBain clear but he fired his shot wide with only Thomson to beat.
Youngson did well to win the ball back for Culter before weaving along the edge of the box, his final shot drifted wide. Thomson made a fine save when a Sim cross took a wicked deflection.
The Longside resistance was broken in 59 minutes when they were punished on the counter attack and GEORGE MCBAIN gave Thomson no chance with a cracking strike from 25 yards. Thomson then made a brilliant double save from Wilson and McAllister to his team in the game.
The visitors made a change when Marchi replaced Campbell. The home side increased their lead in 68 minutes when RYAN STOTT ran onto a Sim cross to head past Thomson from 10 yards. Five minutes later Culter added a third when RYAN STOTT notched his second.
Longside replaced the injured Donaldson with Butcher. ADAM WILSON completed the scoring in the 86th minute when he capitalised on slack play in the Longside defence.
After being punished for silly errors and once Culter scored their first goal they never looked back. Longside will rue the fact that they didn’t score first but will be disappointed with the manner in which they gave away some sloppy goals.
This Saturday Longside are back on Superleague duty at home to Ellon United kick off 2.30pm
