Peterhead legend Rory McAllister sinks old club with winner for Cove Rangers
An early strike by Blue Toon legend Rory McAllister gave Cove Rangers victory over nine-man Peterhead in the first fixture of 2021 on Saturday.
McAllister, who joined Cove last year, struck just 90 seconds into the clash with his old club at the Balmoral Stadium.
And that proved enough to overcome Jim McInally’s side who finished the match with nine men after red cards for Simon Ferry and Steven Boyd.
McInally included Jordon Brown, whose return to Peterhead from Cove was announced on New Year’s Day. in his starting line-up.
But with less than two minutes on the clock they were a goal behind as McAllister beat Joshua Rae with a header from a Fraser Fyvie free-kick.
Rae did well to prevent McAllister adding a second before Peterhead’s task was made all the more difficult by the dismissal of Ferry midway through the first half for a challenge on Mitch Megginson.
Although Scott Brown had a free-kick deflected wide, most of the traffic was towards Peterhead’s goal and Jamie Masson and Leighton McIntosh - another former Peterhead player - both came close to doubling Cove’s advantage.
It remained 1-0 at the break but Peterhead’s already difficult task was made even harder seven minutes after the restart when Boyd was red-carded for dissent .
Cove continued to press forward as they sought to put the game beyond the visitors.
But Peterhead held firm and almost grabbed an unlikely equaliser nine minutes from time when Alan Cook’s shot was pushed round the post by Stuart McKenzie.
