Mighty Maud outwit three time Scottish Cup champs

Maud travelled to Dundee to face Tayport in the 3rd rd of the GA Engineering Inter Regional Cup and Maud’s squad were down to the bare bones as they had only 11 fit players so this was a daunting task facing them.

This was a brilliant performance from the away side especially with the squad depleted with injuries and of lately their good football didn’t always bring home a positive result.

Maud were well worth their win against the much fancied opponents.

The whole team performed well and were a credit to the club how they handled themselves after losing defender Hall to a horrific injury after three minutes.

This win was even more impressive as Tayport have not lost to a team from the North Region for 20 years and only the twice ever.

Fraser Hall had to be taken to hospital by ambulance and the game held up for 45 minutes due to his injury. Fraser came on to replace Hall.

Morrice was first to test the home keeper Logier but his shot was straight at the big keeper for a comfortable save.

The home side were nearly gifted a chance when poor defending by Chalmers nearly let in Lawson to score.

Fraser and Barbour were involved in some neat football for the away side and Fraser’s cross was met by the in rushing Duguid who just failed to get enough on his header to work the goalkeeper.

The same two players combined again and a fierce shot by Fraser from the right was brilliantly saved by the Logie at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.

The home side’s first shot on target was easily saved by Barbour, minutes later Maud had a let off when a free kick was driven into the box by Rollo and fortunately it missed everyone and went past the post.

On 38 minutes Maud took a deserved lead when a Fraser freekick from the right, it was met at the back post by Chalmers who guided the ball into the net past Logie.

The score was 0-1 at half time.

Into the second half and on 54 minutes Maud doubled their lead when another Fraser freekick was played into the feet of Duguid on the edge of the box and he wriggled past three defenders and calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Six minutes later and the home side had pulled a goal back when a neat one-two by Adam and Lawson ended in a cross ball falling for Adam and he eventually bundled the ball past Barbour in the away goal.

For the next 10 minutes Maud were forced to defend as Tayport pushed forward to try and get back on level terms but the away side defence stood firm with some great blocks and limited the home side to very few openings.

Maud made their first change with 18 mins left when Fraser was replaced by Stott.

Chalmers had to stretch to stop a ball getting through to Adam who would have had a one on one with the keeper.

A long ball forward found Duguid with a free run on goal but the big centre half made up the ground to get back in time to make a timely tackle.

Towards the end of the game Maud had three great chances to seal the game with Duguid having 2 shots coming close and Barbour with a header which went into the side netting.

The home side nearly took the game into a penalty shootout when Adam was played in on goal but Maud keeper Barbour was quick off his line to block the shot.

Next week Maud have a home League game against Hermes in the PMAC Superleague with a 2pm Ko.
