With a good win under their belts already in the Grill Cup, this game was the first of three local derbies that would conclude the League Section of the Grill Cup.
Maud started brightly and after four minutes Frazer Hall whipped in a corner that flew across the Hearts goal area but no Maud player could finish it off.
On nine minutes yet another corner was conceded by Hearts, this time Bob Morrice laid in a ball into the area where John Ross was on hand to open the scoring for Maud. Two minutes later Maud deservedly increased their lead when Allan Hale broke from midfield and laid the ball wide to Morrice, who took in his stride and then crossed to the far post where Mikey Rae immediately put the ball back into the danger area where Luke Barbour finished off to give Maud a 2 - 0 lead.
Although Maud were on top Hearts were closing them down and the fluent football seen previously was more difficult.
On 28 minutes, one of the Maud goalscorers, Ross, had to be replaced with Murray Reid due to injury.
Ten minutes before half time Sean Bremner played a great one-two with Morrice to get inside the box. His shot was well hit but the keeper managed to save for a corner, this one was swung onto the goal line and despite Maud players closing the defenders down it was cleared.
On 38 minutes Maud did increase their lead when a simple ball from Hale found Morrice in the area and he finished with ease to put Maud 3-0 up.
Just after Scott Bruce was suddenly called into action but he made a great low save at the post to keep his clean sheet.
Just on half time, Barbour found Jack Stott in the area but his shot was just over the bar. So half time came and Maud were well on top despite not playing the flowing football seen earlier in the week.
In the first ten minutes of the second half, Maud really pushed forward to try and increase their lead.
On 58 minutes Morrice, who was causing havoc wide left, beat the defenders to cross a great ball into the penalty area and the desperate clearance by the Hearts defence almost resulted in an own goal but it was narrowly over the bar for a corner to Maud that came to nothing.
Just after another substitution saw James Duguid replace Bremner as Maud tried to finish the game off. Unfortunately not long after coming on he received a dead leg, which was unpunished by the ref and had to be replaced by Kenny Mair.
On the hour mark Hall again laid a great ball down the line for Hale to run onto, he ran into the area but his low shot was saved.
Five minutes later Duguid got into the action with another shot on the Hearts goal but again it was saved.
With 69 minutes gone, Maud, who were now giving Hearts far too much time and space on the ball, paid the price when Ballard scored to peg back the Maud lead to two goals.
With 12 minutes to go, Hearts were pushing to score again, a long high ball through the middle saw Bruce rush out to make a vital save on the edge of the area.
Ballard ran onto the ball but also conceded a free kick. He made amends by making a fine save from the free kick to preserve the two-goal cushion for Maud.
With five minutes go Maud again pushed forward and Hall laid the ball right into the six-yard area where Kevin Simpson looked like he was going to score at the far post but it was somehow scrambled away and despite two more close range efforts the ball wouldn’t go in.
Hale had another chance right near the end when he got the ball from Mair, and then returned the ball but Mair’s shot hit a defender and was deflect clear.
This was Maud’s second win the the league section and although the second half wasn’t as convincing as the first, they did enough to ease past a feisty Hearts team.
Having to make three substitutions, two due to injuries also didn’t help with the flow of the game. The remaining local derbies will her just as tough and Maud will have to be prepared to work just as hard as they did in this game.
