Maud took Buchan derby honours on Saturday with a 2-0 Superleague win over Longside at Davidson Park.
The home side will have to reflect on the chances scorned as they had two great opportunities to score before Maud’s opener but once they got in front the visitors were always going to be difficult to peg back and ran out worthy winners.
In the opening minute Butcher got on the end of a Stephen Davidson cross but he couldn’t get power in his header and the chance was lost.
A Thomson free kick found Duncan but his header was straight at Bruce. Maud’s first real chance saw a Garden volley cleared off the line by Little. Campbell went down in the box after a challenge but the referee waived away any penalty claims.
A Little free kick was spilled by Maud’s Bruce after a challenge with Duncan but the referee gave a foul to the keeper. Duncan then latched onto a Beddie pass but his left foot shot went wide. Morrice jinked his way clear on the right but his cross went behind for a goal kick.
The home side had a great chance to open the scoring when Cardno put Duncan clear and his cross found Campbell but he dragged his shot wide from eight yards. At the other end Morrice drifted past two defenders and his shot was blocked before it broke to Hale but the Longside defence got back to clear the danger.
A good move for Maud saw them claim for a penalty after Hale went clear only to go down in the box after a challenge but the referee saw it as a dive and booked the forward. Duncan crossed from the right to Campbell and goal bound effort was brilliantly saved by Bruce.
The visitors had the ball in the night when Barbour headed home a cross from the right following an Alexander corner but the goal was ruled offside. Butcher found himself in the clear for Longside but his chip shot was saved easily by Bruce.
The deadlock was broken in 25 minutes after Maud were awarded a free kick just outside the box, ALLAN HALE made an expert job guiding his shot beyond Thomson. Minutes later Hale raced clear of the home defence again but Thomson came out of his goal to make a fine save.
Garden saw his flick beat Thomson but it just drifted over the bar. Norris found Butcher with a great through ball but he headed wide when he might have had time to control the ball first. Little then played Duncan in but his shot was saved by Bruce at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.
Cardno put Butcher clear and he went down after a clash with Bruce but the referee waived away ant penalty claims and showed Butcher a yellow card. The referee did point to the spot in 44 minutes when Beddie was adjudged to have fouled Morrice inside the box, MICHAEL RAE made no mistake from the spot.
Longside made a quick change five minutes into the second half when Whyte replaced Little. Whyte was soon in action finding Duncan at the far post and his header was cleared for a corner, Norris got on the end of Butcher’s kick but it went straight to Bruce.
A Whyte free kick was saved by Bruce at the second attempt. Rae then saw his 20 yard shot go wide after good work from Barbour. Butcher headed a Duncan cross goalward but Bruce had it covered. A 30 yard free kick from Campbell was wide of the target.
Hale saw his 25 yard free kick blocked by the Longside defensive wall before being cleared upfield. The visitors made their first change when Duguid replaced Alexander. Longside made a second change with Stainton making way for Porter.
A Whyte cross was headed wide by Duncan from ten yards. A dangerous free kick from Hale was headed clear by Donaldson. Morrice had a 20 yard shot blocked by Beddie. Cardno latched onto a Bruce pass but his shot was cleared off the line and the danger was past.
Duguid took a return pass from Barbour but his shot was superbly saved by Thomson. Just on time Maud were reduced to ten men when Hall was shown a red card after he had fouled Stephen Davidson outside the box, Bruce blasted the free kick over the bar.
Longside are away to Hall Russell next Saturday in the PMAC group Superleague (ko 1.30pm) and Maud are away to Culter in the GA Inter regional cup (ko 1.15pm).
