The Buchan Welfare Football League had a play-off to decide this year’s title winners and it was between Longside Thistle and Grange United which was played at Watson Park, Cruden Bay on a blustery day.

Grange started well against the wind and took the lead after Gary Milne played in Brent Holtby Wall down the right and he cut in and fired a low shot into the corner of the net

On 13 minutes Longside got a deserved equaliser when Neil Buchan was played in on goal and he slotted home.

At the other end AJ Buchan came close with a lobb over Turriff but it went over the bar.

Longside started where they left off in the second half - on the attack - and N Buchan was fouled on the edge of the box but Filson’s free kick went well wide.

Longside had two more chances from Neil Buchan and W Buchan but both were wasted.

Grange took the lead against the run of play from a corner which was curled in and Paul Rhynd came in at the back post to head home.

They increased their lead when a ball was launched forward and Brent Holtby Wall headed on and then smashed the ball home into the net for the Grange to go ahead 3-1.

Longside were now camped in the Grange half and N Buchan and William Filson both had further chances but were finding it hard to get past Campbell who made two brilliant saves.

On 80 minutes Longside finally got a goal back when Jamie Park played in Neil Buchan who fired into the corner of the net.

Longside were reduced down to ten men after Jamie Park was red-carded.

In the end Grange held on to win the league title.

Longside must rue their missed chances but found Grange goal keeper Campbell in brilliant form.

Thanks have been expressed to Cruden Bay Juniors FC for the use of their facilities for their pla-yoff match.
