Longside pick up another three points

LONGSIDE welcomed Sunnybank to Davidson Park on Saturday in the Superleague.

The visitors started the game better and Dick fired a long range shot which was saved by Shields. Stewart did well on the right for Sunnybank and he sent over a terrific cross which was missed by everybody before the Longside defence managed to get the ball clear.

A Lyon free kick was parried by Shields before the referee awarded a foul. Sunnybank deservedly took the lead in the 19th minute when Stewart played the ball back to Jordan Cassie to score from eight yards.

Longside equalised six minutes later when Marchi headed the ball into the path of John Usher and he scored from close range. With 28 minutes gone Longside took the lead when Cardno crossed the bal for Nico Marchi to head home at the far post.

Whyte tried a shot from 25 yards but Shields was right behind it and minutes later Duff saw his 25-yard shot go narrowly wide. Calum Davidson went on a good run and from his cut back Cardno could not find the target and the chance was lost.

Sunnybank equalised in 42 minutes when Ryan Dick saw his fierce shot deceive Shields and hit the back of the net. A minute later Panton put Usher clear and from his cross Knowles made a superb point blank save to keep out Marchi’s diving header.

The home side regained the lead in the 51st minute when Nico Marchi gave Knowles no chance with a cracking free kick from 25 yards. Cardno worked his way to the edge of the box but his shot was cleared.

Porter made space on the right before finding Cardno inside the box, be checked inside before firing in a shot which went straight to Knowles. Marchi was next to line up a chance when he cut the ball back for Calum Davidson arriving in the box but his effort went wide.

Panton saw his 25-yard strike go through a ruck of players but it went past the post. Longside made a change in 76 minutes when Usher was replaced by Danton. The visitors were awarded a penalty when Beddie felled Stewart in the box, Joss Low made no mistake from the spot.

Calum Davidson put Longside back in front when he strode forward before sending a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner. At the other end a Dick shot was superbly saved by Shields at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.

Sunnybank equalised again in the 88th minute when the Longside defence failed to get the ball clear and it fell to Allan Smith and he beat Shields with a good strike from 15 yards. With a draw looking the likely outcome the home side scored the winner in injury time. A Bruce free kick found Ben Danton at the far post and he headed the ball into the net.

Spectators seem to be guaranteed excitement at Longside just now, and this was another welcome three points. But missed chances and poor defending could have been costly.

The team once again showed the grit and determination needed to rise up the table. Longside were best served by Cardno and Marchi who were both superb.

This Saturday Longside are at home to Stonehaven in the Superleague with a 1.30pm kick-off.
