Longside despair after scoring 4

IT WAS back to earth with a cruel bump for Longside after last week’s victory.

You shouldn’t score four goals and get beaten, but once again it was the giving away of cheap goals which was the undoing of the Davidson Park men.

In all honesty, Hall Russell United did not have to work all that hard to earn them.

The home side opened the scoring in this Superleague match in the fifth minute when Craig Bruce took a return pass from Cardno before guiding the ball past Simpson. Minutes later a Bruce free kick was scrambled clear by the Halls defence.

Hall Russells equalised in the 12th minute when a high ball into the box was cleared as far as Ryan Petrie just outside the box and his strike was deflected past Thomson although Whyte of Longside did seem to be impeded in the build up.

With 17 minutes gone Longside regained the lead when a 20 yard shot from Ryan Duncan was deflected past Simpson. A minute later and the scores were level again when Petrie scored his second with a 25 yard free kick.

A porter free kick was met by Butcher but he headed wide of the target and at the other end Carroll caught Thomson off his line with a 30 yard shot which went narrowly wide.

Longside were awarded a penalty in the 26th minute when the referee adjudged a Hall Russells defender had handled a Porter cross, Sean Butcher made no mistake from the spot. Hay weaved his way into the Longside box and tried a shot from 16 yards but Thomson was right behind it.

The visitors drew level again in 30 minutes when Peter Shaw cut in from the left before clipping the ball over Thomson from just inside the box. The Longside keeper then did well to tip away a Carroll header.

A dangerous cross from Butcher caused panic in the visiting defence before they managed to get the ball clear.

A cross come shot from Duncan for Longside went over the bar. A Petrie corner was well taken out of the air by Thomson under pressure. A Porter cross found Butcher and his shot was blocked with Bruce first to get to the loose ball but his strike was also blocked before being cleared upfield.

Another cutback from Porter was met by Duncan on the penalty spot but he fired the ball over the bar. Halls survived another scramble when a Bruce cross was sent into the box with Duncan and Butcher both having shots blocked before the danger was cleared.

Petrie was allowed far too much time and space at the other end before drilling a low shot just wide of the target. Milne was next up when he fired in a shot from 20 yards but Thomson was right behind it. Longside made a double change with Stainton and Walker replacing Bruce and Butcher.

Halls took the lead with 75 minutes gone when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, Petrie saw his strike take a wicket deflection to give Thomson no chance. A Porter corner was headed over the top by Norris from eight yards.

In the 89th minute a Walker free kick was well saved by Simpson and the ball was cleared out to Panton and from his cross the ball appeared to strike the arm of a Halls defender, the referee pointed to the spot and this time Ross Walker stepped up to put the keeper the wrong way.

With a draw seeming the likely outcome the visitors scored the winner deep into stoppage time when Barry Milne was allowed a free header six yards out following a corner.

This Saturday Longside are again on Superleague duty with a difficult trip to Stonehaven (ko 1.30pm).

Longside: Thomson, Whyte, Beddie, Arthur, Panton, Norris, Porter, Cardno, Duncan, Butcher and Bruce. Subs: Weir, Heatherwick, Donaldson, Walker and Stainton.
