Longside back to winning ways

Longside travelled to play Hall Russell on Saturday in the PMAC group superleague.

The home side had a great chance to open the scoring in the second minute when Milne got free on the right and from his cross Shaw headed over from a good position.

Minutes later Mackie had a long range effort but Thomson had it covered. A Donaldson free kick was headed on by Campbell for Little but he couldn’t get enough power behind his shot and the chance was lost.

Milne burst through the Longside defence but Thomson made a fine save at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.

Walker tried to catch Halls keeper Simpson off his line with a 45-yard chip shot but the keeper was alert to save. A minute later Walker seized on a poor clearance and tried to beat Simpson again, this time he did beat the keeper but his shot was off target.

Milne caused problems for Longside again when he went clear on the right but his dangerous cross flashed across goal and went out for a goalkick. Donaldson got on the end of a Cardno free kick but his header went wide. I

n the 30th minute Milne fired a shot from 30 yards well over the bar.

Longside made a change in the 40th minute when Nicol Davidson was replaced by Porter. Minutes later Shaw was sent clear for the home side but Thomson made a superb save, Innes was first to react but his goalbound effort was brilliantly cleared for a corner by Donaldson.

The visitors started the second half better and free kicks from Donaldson and Walker causing a few problems for the home defence.

At the other end Mackie fired a 30-yard shot well wide and Shaw put Young clear on the left but his cross was well saved by Thomson.

Longside survived a goalmouth scramble when shots from Shaw and Milne were blocked before the ball was scrambled clear. Bruce became the second change for Longside when he replaced Little.

It was the turn of the home defence to ensue a goalmouth scramble when a Porter corner was spilled by the keeper, Steven Davidson saw his shot blocked before the ball was thumped to safety for another corner which was too deep and the danger had passed.

Shaw ran clear for Hall Russells but his shot was brilliantly saved by Thomson. Campbell then had a great chance for Longside when he stole the ball from Russell before going clear but he fired the ball over the bar.

The visitors took the lead in the 69th minute when Steven Davidson found Ross Walker with a great through ball and he coolly rounded the keeper before firing the ball home.

Longside doubled their lead five minutes later when Campbell played the ball through for Scott Porter and he drilled the ball home after Simpson had failed to cut out the pass. A minute later the visitors were reduced to ten men when Bruce was shown a red card for an off the ball incident.

Halls tried hard to get back into the game but the Longside rearguard stood firm.

This was a much better result for Longside and a valuable three points. They rode their luck in the first half when they had to defend very well at times but came more into things in the second half and ran out worthy winners in the end.

It would be hard to single anyone out as it was a real team effort with quite a few five star performers but the win was the most important thing.

If they can show the same fight and determination in the coming weeks then they will surely rise up the league table.
