Little luck for under-strength Hearts

BUCHANHAVEn Hearts took on Burghead Thistle on a chilly afternoon at Raemoss Park on Saturday.

With so many players missing and barely able to field a team, an under-strength Hearts kicked off and almost took the lead when Mair blasted a great shot from distance against the Thistle crossbar.

Hearts were doing okay when a Lewis Brown free kick just failed to give them the lead when it went just wide, but they were caught by a sucker punch when Thistle took the lead when a through ball caught the Hearts defence square and Rogers ran through to shoot past Bennett.

Hearts hit back and Mair again tried his luck from 25 yards out but was too high.

Thistle made it 0-2 when Hearts didn’t clear and the ball fell to Duncan who volleyed past Bennett from the edge of the box. Hearts kept fighting hard and Kenny Mair eventually scored his goal that his play deserved to make it 1-2 with a shot from 18 yards which beat McLaren all ends up and gave Hearts a chance right on half time.

Hearts came out looking for the equaliser and Scott McLeod tried to get on the end of a Brown cross but McLaren beat him to the ball.

Bennett then pulled off a good save from Paterson for a Thistle corner which Gordon just headed wide.

Lewis Brown got down the left and whipped in a great ball across goal but no one was in the box to take advantage and the chance was gone.

Hearts huffed and puffed but couldn’t take the advantage in front of goal and Burghead made the game safe when McLean misplaced a clearance straight to McLaren who rounded Bennett to shoot into an empty net.

Burghead held out comfortably for the victory.

This was yet another disappointing day for Hearts who aren’t getting any luck at the moment and with so many players not being available a victory was always going to be very difficult under these circumstances but the players that were there battled well.

The team’s confidence is low and their heads are easily going down but they need some good fortune to give there season a spark and revive their fortunes as it is going to be a long haul in the last remaining nine league games.

Hearts next game is away to Islavale in a league encounter on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.
