BUCHANHAVEN Hearts had Longside as the visitors in a Grill Cup match at Raemoss Park at the weekend.

The away side took the game to Hearts when Duncan toe poked an effort just over the bar, then the opening goal came when Bruce was given too much time to cross the ball and Ross Cardno headed home past Bennett.

Hearts couldn’t get into the game and Longside went 2-0 up when again Hearts didn’t close down their opponents and Cardno scored his second with a cracking strike from outside the box.

Hearts tried hard to get back into the game and McLeod tried a shot from distance but didn’t trouble the Longside keeper.

Longside then made it 3-0 when a Stainton corner was headed home by the unmarked Norris.

Hearts then conceded a fourth goal with yet again Longside given far too much time on the ball and Stainton scored with ease from close range.

Hearts were napping and allowed Bruce to shoot home from 25 yards into the top corner giving Bennett no chance and putting Longside 5-0 up at half time.

Hearts had nothing but pride to play for in the second half and that’s what they were certainly doing and it saw them reduce the deficit to 5-1 when a free kick from Cross found Kevin Cunningham who turned and shot past Duffy.

Hearts were so much improved from the first half and it was continuing as they were closing there opponents down more quickly and Ballard had the ball in the back of the net but was harshly ruled offside.

Longside’s Porter had a chance at the back post but headed straight at Bennett. Hearts did pull another goal back when Ballard run through and coolly picked his spot to make it 5-2.

Just as Hearts were beginning to get more of the play a mistake saw Lewis Brown head a cross straight to Walker who couldn’t miss from six yards out making it 6-2.

Heart’s Bruce was unlucky with his overhead kick effort which was well saved by Duffy.

A very poor performance in the first half saw Hearts torn apart from the Superleague visitors which was mostly down to Hearts’ own doing through not closing down Longside but a much better and improved performance in the second half saw them restore some pride.

However, it couldn’t repair the damage that was done in the poor first half .

The next game is also at home to Whitehills in a Grill Cup encounter on Saturday with a kick-off time of 2pm.

Hearts would like to thank Charlie Donaldson of C&L Supplies (Peterhead) Ltd who sponsored the match and they chose Ross Cardno of Longside for their man of the match.

This sponsorship was very much appreciated and great hospitality was had by all those who attended.
