Gritty performance from Bay

CRUDEN Bay played Islavale for the second week, this time at Keith, in the Domino Pizza North Region Cup preliminary round.

The Bay found themselves under pressure in the opening minutes. Anderson made a run down the right and put the ball to Blackhall, who cut inside the box and pit in a shot which McKessick saved comfortably.

The visitors had a lucky escape with only a few minutes gone when Shand put Cowie free down the middle and the latter’s shot beat the advancing McKessick and went inches past the post.

The early pressure for the home side paid off after ten minutes when Hector rose unchallenged to head home a free kick from the right by Collins. Although the Bay were initially under pressure they gradually began to fight their way back into the game, playing some neat attacking football.

This eventually paid off after 24 minutes when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Whyte took the kick and floated the ball beautifully over the defensive wall and the home keeper and into the net.

The goal really spurred the Bay into action and they put the home side under more pressure. A good run down the left by Ramsey ended with a cross which Lawrence met but could only put over the bar.

Islavale did manage one or two counter attacks however, but the Bay continued to press and a move involving Ramsay and Whyte ended with the latter’s cross being put wide by Lawrence.

The Bay’s neat, attacking football paid off once again after 41 minutes. Sime put in a great pass out to Lawrence on the right. The youngster cut inside and crossed the ball eventually falling to Inglis who made no mistake from close range to give Bay the lead.

But they weren’t finished and a couple of minutes from half time they got their third; Park put the ball to Inglis who again made no mistake from close range.

Bay started the second half on the attack and this was causing the home side all sorts of problems.

It was vitually all the Bay as the second half progressed with the home defence constantly under pressure, but despite this they could not increase their lead.

It’s back to league business on Saturday (August 25), when they entertain Colony Park at Watson Park with a 2pm kick-off.
