Football: Maud share spoils with Culter

Maud travelled to face League Champions Culter and the away side created the first chance with a move involving Barbour, Bremner and Duguid with the latter getting a shot on target which Pennet saved.

After seven minutes Duguid again had a shot on target but it was straight at the home keeper who easily saved.

Duguid then sent a low ball across the six yard area and Bremner came sliding in at the Back post but his left foot shot went wide of the goal. A mistake by J Robertson let McAllister a shot on goal which went high over the bar.

On 14 minutes the home side took the lead against the run of play when Leith got free on the left and his cross was met by McAllister who slotted home.

Maud came on the attack again and Duguid set up Alexander whose shot was well blocked by Kelly.

On 18 mins Maud drew level when L Barbour collected the ball on the left beat then he cut in and went passed three players and his cut back found James Duguid who fired home for a deserved equaliser.

Culter were only level for one minute after poor defending by Maud let a cross from Greig go right across goal and Youngson had a simple finish from close. Barbour in the away goal then made three brilliant saves from close range from shots by McAllister, Youngson and then Rintoul.

Just before half -time McAllister found himself clear in on goals but his shot was brilliantly saved by Barbour.

Maud started the second half on the front foot and were frustrating the Culter team who picked up a few cautions, one of which was by McAllister who already was cautioned in the first half so was sent from the field of play. Sim had a snap shot from the edge of the visitor’s box which Barbour dealt with comfortably.

The away side had a great chance to level the score after good work by Barbour who played in Bremner on the right and he only had the keeper to beat but shot straight at him and the chance was gone.

Maud then made a double change with Hale and Fraser replacing Rae and Bremner. A great run by Barbour who went past three defenders but Reid got across just in time to block as Barbour was about to shoot.

Maud came again and an Alexander cross fell to Fraser and his first time shot was cleared off the line with the Maud players shouting that the ball had crossed the line but the referee waived aside their claims.

Fraser then crossed for Barbour whose header went narrowly over the bar. On 80 mins Maud made their final change with Morrice on for Duguid. Another chance came from a Fraser cross which Barbour could only head straight at Pennet.

A ball into the Culter box was only cleared as far as Fraser who’s volley from 18 yards was brilliantly saved by Pennet.

A rare break by the home side resulted in a shot by Youngson which Barbour saved. With the 90 minutes played time was running out for the visitors but the ball was played out to Hall on the left and his brilliant cross was attacked by Craig Ritchie at the front post to poke home for this first goal for the club in 18 months.

One final chance for the away side came when a through ball looked like finding Morrice in on goal but Reid got across just in time to block.

This was a match which Maud controlled for the majority of the game but poor defending cost them two goals.

Maud made a great fight back showing coming from a goal down twice to earn a point. This was another excellent performance by the whole team who played some brilliant passing football which is a treat to watch.
