Football: Hall Russell clinical in 4-2 win over Maud

Maud had Hall Russell as visitors in a league game in which they made a poor start but came back strong to get back level, but again, missed chances cost them dearly and with the away side’s clinical finishing earning them all 3 points.

It was the away side that got a shot on target first with Mackie firing straight at Barbour in the home goal.

On seven mins the visitors took the lead when Innes lobbed Barbour from the edge of the box.

Three minutes later Maud thought they had levelled the score after a Barbour shot came back off the post and it rebounded out and Duguid was first to react to put the ball into the net but the linesman ruled it offside when the opposition player Whitfield looked as though he was playing everyone onside.

The visitors went up the other end and a Mackie shot from 18 yards was deflected past the home keeper Barbour to double their lead.

Maud hit back and a Duguid freekick was deflected out for a corner which was curled in and the away keeper managed to punch clear.

Maud then had another goal chalked off when Barbour challenged the away keeper for the ball and it fell to a Maud player to fire home but the referee again disallowed the goal.

Hall went down the left and sent a great ball across the 6 yard box just avoiding the incoming Barbour.

Duguid was next to sent in another dangerous cross which Whitfield cleared for a corner which was swung in by Alexander and after a scramble Simpson poked the ball home to reduce the lead to one.

Duguid gathered the ball on the right and laid the ball back to Bremner to cross and it was met by Alexander whose header went over the bar.

A break by the visitors Hay on the right and his cross was met by Innes who headed straight at Barbour who held easily.

Maud created another two chances in the first half with a Bremner cross to the back post and an Alexander shot was blocked by Craig Carroll then a Duguid cross was headed goalwards by Simpson but was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Carroll.

Maud started on the front foot in the second half and earned a freekick out on the left touchline, Alexander sent in another good delivery but Bremner managed to put past the post from close.

On 48 minutes Ritchie sent a long ball over the Hall Russell defence which Chalmers latched onto and he calmly slotted the ball past the visiting keeper to draw the game level.

Maud then made their first change with Ritchie being replaced by Graham.

The home side had to make another change on 55 mins after the injured L Barbour went off and Hale came on.

A cross from the left found Graham at the back post but Carroll came out to block.

Hale was next to send a terrific cross in but it was just out of the reach of the advancing Bremner. A 1:2 by Hale and Duguid ended with another corner and Alexander swung it in and Robertson rose high but couldn’t keep his header on target.

On 75 mins Maud made their final change with Fraser on for Bremner.

A poor kick out by Barbour fell to Forbes who slotted a ball through to Innes who made no mistake with his finish to give the visitors the lead again.

Alexander came close to levelling the score but saw his header go narrowly wide.

With the home side pushing for an equaliser the visitor’s caught them on the break and Hay went down the right and his cross was met by Mackie and his shot hit a Maud defender and squeezed into the net.
