Football: Gauld and Locos put Peterhead to the sword in Aberdeenshire Shield

Peterhead goalscorer Kevin Buchan has said Highland League side Inverurie Loco Works were ‘hungier’ for their 3-2 win in Tuesday’s Aberdeenshire Shield tie.

Jamie Redman nodded in Peterhead's second but it was too little too late.

The 19-year-old former Dundee man scored his first goal in his first start to give Peterhead a foothold.

Unfortunately for Buchan, Locos stiker Neil Gauld proved too good for McInally’s men, netting twice.

Buchan said: “I think they were hungrier than us.

“They had a strategy to play the game - they went route one and it worked.

“We just couldn’t get the ball down and pass it.

“It felt good to get the equalising goal. When I scored I thought we were going to get back into the game but it turned out that they scored again and that was a downer.”

The game began promisingly for Buchan and the visitors, with the rangy teenager lifting the ball onto the bar in the third minute.

But in the 23rd minute Neil Gauld controlled a lobbed ball from former Toon man David Ross and curled past former Locos’ stopper Paul Jarvie.

Buchan equalised when a 38th minute Jamie Redman cross was nodded back across goal by Jordon Brown and he volleyed in - the first time Locos had conceded a first half goal in six games.

Sadly Buchan’s work was undone only moments later when Neil McLean turned in a shot from another Peterhead alumnus - Martin Bavidge.

Then in the 52nd minute Locos put the game beyond an understrength Toon team.

Gauld burst into a canyon of space in midfield, carried the ball forward more than 40 yards and slotted past a diving Jarvie to make the score 3-1.

It was not until the arrival of Andy Rodgers and Rory McAllister in the 63rd minute that the Toon offered a real goal threat.

To send in the cavalry - the pair scored thrice in the 4-2 victory at Elgin - McInally pulled off the fading Buchan and McGlinchey.

When Gilfillan tried to clear a ball Jarvie had already charged off his line to collect, Redman was forced to block a snap shot and clear high up field.

Rodgers, back towards goal, flicked a tidy ball round his marker and set McAllister free in space.

McCann’s resulting corner befuddled the Loco back line and Brown was on hand again to turn the ball back across, this time for Redman to score.

Although Peterhead pushed hard they could not craft another meaningful opportunity.

Peterhead: Jarvie, Sharp, McGlinchey (Rodgers), Buchan (McAllister), McGeever, Cowie, McCann, Redman, McLaren, Brown, Gilfillan.

Unused: McDonald (gk), Alexander.
