Ellon run out winners in derby

Longside had Ellon United as visitors on Saturday in the Superleague.

In the first minute Forbes beat the offside trap for the visitors but his shot was well blocked by Donldson at the expense of a corner, Simpson’s kick was well taken by Thomson.

A fine cross from Calum Davidson at the other end was cleared by McKinnon as far as Park but he drove his shot wide from twelve yards.

Longside were awarded a free kick with 13 minutes gone. Park’s kick was good but no-one got on the end of it and the ball went through to goalkeeper McKinnon.

Ellon had a good chance when Forbes played the ball through to Bailey but his shot was well saved by Thomson before the rebound fell for the same player but this time his shot struck the post before going out for a goalkick.

Porter turned well on the edge of the box before firing in a shot which McKinnon saved at the second attempt.

Norris got on the end of a Calum Davidson cross but his header was saved by McKinnon on the goal line. Simpson picked up the ball on the edge of the Longside box but his shot went into the side netting.

Ellon were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute after Forbes was upended by Donaldson, Greg Simpson made an expert job from the spot firing the ball into the roof of the net. A Simpson corner was met by Forbes but he hooked the ball wide.

Forbes had a good chance for Ellon to double the advantage following a Simpson corner but he fired his shot over the bar.

Usher played a free kick inside for Marchi, he turned well but the ball was cleared as from his feet as far as Norris and he fired the ball over the bar from the edge of the box.

Calum Davidson had a great chance to square the match in 69 minutes when he ran onto a fine cut back from Porter but he sent his shot wide of the post from eight yards. Longside made two changes in quick succession with firstly Davidson being replaced by Butcher and then Usher made way for Whyte.

Porter did well again on the left before cutting the ball back for Marchi but he dragged his shot wide.

Leonard Johnston put the game beyond Longside’s reach in 88 minutes when he picked the ball up on the edge of the box before firing it into the roof of the net.

Another defeat for Longside who still struggled to find that cutting edge in front of goal, the first goal was always going to be vital and once Ellon went ahead they were going to be difficult to peg back.

This Saturday Longside are at home to Dyce Juniors in the Superleague. (kick-off 2.30pm)
