Clinton lift the Brucklay Cup

IN THE Scottish Cup, second round, New Pitsligo were on their travels to face Western Rovers from the Central Welfare Association and it was a good journey for the Pitsligo boys after they won 5-1 putting them through to the third round.

Their goals came from Michael Fraser and Neil Christie with braces and one from Gilbert Stephen.

Cheers were also on the road to face Westcliff from the Central Welfare League but couldn’t get the better of the home side going down by 3-0.

In the Deejays Nightclub League, Faithlie United faced Mormond Thistle in a league match and it was the home side that collected the three points with a 4-3 win.

A brilliant hatrick from Nathan Sandison on his return to amateur football and one from Gary Clark left the home side 4-1 ahead at half time. Mormond launched a second half comeback scoring two goals but Faithlie held on to win. Mormond scorers were Ross Brown with two and one from Liam Webster.

In the Brucklay Cup final, Clinton Thistle ran out comfortable winners over Invercairn United.

The match kicked off on a sunny day but a heavy pitch. Invercairn were first on attack when JJ Sim fired in a shot which Adams got down low to his right to push the ball round the post.

At the other end Noble hit a shot from distance but it went well wide of the goal. Cardno went on a good run and it finished with a shot from the edge of the box which Adams gathered at the second attempt.

On 32 minutes Humpheries was fouled inside the Invercairn box and was awarded a penalty. Fowlie stepped up and dispatched the ball into the corner of the net to give Clinton Thistle the lead.

A few minutes later Invercairn had a big shout for a penalty waived aside by the referee. Humpheries did well on the right and his cutback fell to Noble and his deflected shot went wide of the goal.

Three minutes before half time Clinton doubled their lead when Noble broke up field and played out wide to Humpheries who found Kewley and he lashed his shot into the roof of the net.

At the start of the second half JJ Sim broke down the right and found Martin inside the box but he fired his shot high over the bar. Milne made good progress up field beating three players but a great challenge by Gary Paterson prevented Milne getting a shot off.

On 73 minutes Clinton increased their lead when a Noble cross was not cleared by the Invercairn defence and Bob Buchan shot low into the net.

A Forman in-swinging corner was punched clear by Adams only as far as JJ Sim who played to Strachan but his shot was deflected over the bar.

JJ Sim then fired a brilliant cross along the six-yard box but there were no takers. Substitute Slater completed the scoring when his shot flew past the diving Pirie.

Both teams were pretty evenly matched until the opening goal was scored, but after Clinton added a second just before half time, there was only going to be one winner.

Invercairn did push hard in the second half but the Clinton midfield of Milne, Noble and Cowe backed up by the impressive Fowlie at sweeper kept Invercairn at bay.
