Campbell penalty proves a winner for Longside

LONGSIDE enjoyed another big win on Saturday, and a much-needed three points against Ellon United.

A draw was probably a fair result, but it makes a change for Longside to get a rub of the green as they have had a few games where the luck has not been on their side.

Longside had Ellon United as visitors on Saturday in the PMAC Group Superleague. Stewart got on the end of a Annand cross but he sent his header wide.

In the second minute, Bruce had to clear the ball for a corner with Leahy lurking in the box, Annand’s kick was headed clear by Whyte.

A Campbell cross was deflected and Steer in the Ellon goal made a fine reactive save. A Whyte cross for Longside was picked up by Zander Davidson and he in turn found Walker but his shot went straight to Steer.

With 14 minutes gone, Steer made another fine save to turn a Walker free kick round the post, Butcher’s corner was met by Donaldson but the referee awarded a foul against the Longside defender.

Whyte fired the ball into the middle for Walker, but he scooped the ball over the bar from 15 yards. Thomson did well to fist clear an Annand corner, Whelan picked up the loose ball but his shot was well off target. Walker took a return pass from Butcher, but he dragged his shot wide.

Tait did well on the left, before sending a the ball across the Longside goal, but nobody was there to take advantage. The home side took the lead in the 36th minute, when a Butcher back heel was played into the path of Ross Walker by Cardno, and he coolly slipped the ball past Steer.

Thomson came to the Longside rescue when he saved a Leahy header as Stewart was waiting to pounce. Leahy then tried to catch the Longside keeper off his line but he saved the ball at full stretch. The visitors finished the half strongly, but Longside held onto their one goal lead.

Longside forced two corners at the start of the second half, but the Ellon defence managed to get the ball clear. A Tait shot was deflected for a corner, Stewart’s kick was headed down by Dunbar but Thomson dived to save. A long throw caused panic in the Longside defence, but they got the ball upfield.

The home side made a change in 54 minutes when Butcher was replaced by Little. A minute later the scores were level when Callum Dunbar capitalised on a poor pass back before firing the ball past the stranded Thomson. Stewart then had a shot from the edge of the box, but his effort was straight at Thomson.

Longside were awarded a free kick on the hour mark just outside the box, Walker fired over the bar. Dunbar found himself in the clear but his shot was deflected for a corner, from Stewart’s kick Ellon did have the ball in the net but the flag was up for offside.

A great chance for the home side when Steven Davidson headed the ball into the path of Campbell and his shot was brilliantly saved by Steer, Walker was first to the loose ball but his shot was deflected for a corner which came to nothing.

Ellon had a strong claim for a penalty when the ball struck Beddie before going out for a corner, Annand’s kick was headed over the bar by Reid. The home side were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute when Paul Campbell was tripped just inside the box, he made no mistake from the spot.

The visitors threw everything at Longside in the dying minutes and a brilliant reaction save from Thomson kept the lead intact.
