Bellslea on top in eight-goal thriller

IN THE Deejays Nightclub League, New Pitsligo played hosts to St Combs and the first chance came when the home side were awarded a free kick on the halfway line which Scott Duncan floated into the box. Michie rose above the St Combs defence but his header went past the post.

The home side took the lead when a cross was put into the visitor’s box and was deflected into his own net by Hendry. Black then brought a good save from Gordon who managed to push round the post but from the resulting corner Michael Fraser prodded the ball home.

The visitors had a big shout for a penalty turned down then Michael Stephen played in Neil Christie who found the bottom corner of the net. St Combs were reduced to ten men after Niall Taylor was red-carded. Michael Stephen finished off the scoring with a curling shot into the top corner of the net.

Faithlie United entertained Bellslea in a league game and it was the visitors who came out on top in a eight-goal thriller. The winning goals came from Calder and Wemyss, both scoring braces, and the other from Gall. Replying for the home side were Buchan, Stephen with a penalty and one from Whyte.

Invercairn United had home advantage over St Drostans and the away side took the game to the home side and went in front with a goal from Kingaby then the home side drew level.

Invercairn went in front only for Kingaby to draw the Saints level. The home side went in front again with ten minutes remaining but some great saves by away keeper Summers Jnr kept the Saints within one goal of Invercairn.

With five minutes remaining Alan Anderson hit a 25-yard shot into the top corner of the net to earn the Saints a hard earned point.

Panasonic Tavern played hosts to St. Combs and it was the visitors who had the first chance when AJ Buchan was in on goal but home keeper Watson did well to block.

On 20 minutes the home side went in front after Ballard was fouled in the box, the same player took the penalty and scored. Ballard had another chance when he beat the offside trap but Gordon made a brilliant stop.

A minute later AJ Buchan levelled the score when his strike hit took a bobble in front of Watson and flew over the diving keeper. St Combs took the lead on 70 minutes with a well-worked goal ending in Dollman firing home.

Ballard drew the home side level when Cross hit a ball over the St Combs defence and he looped the ball over Gordon. The match looked as though it was heading for a draw when the away side’s top scorer John Smith received the ball on the right and he shot into the roof of the net to win all three points for St Combs.

In the first round of the Brucklay Cup, New Pitsligo entertained Clinton Thistle. It took 12 minutes before a real chance came along and it was a 20-yard shot from Craig Smith which came back off the bar and away.

A minute later the home side took the lead when a Wood shot was deflected into his own net by Aitkenhead.

Five minutes into the second half Clinton drew level when Scott Milne played in Daniel Kewley and he slotted the ball under the out coming Alexander. On 53 minutes the away side were in front when Noble played a through ball to Kewley and he fired home again.

Pitsligo were throwing everyone forward and Michael Fraser hit a brilliant strike but went narrowly past the post. Peter Humphries had the chance to seal the tie when he was sent clear and rounded the keeper but Harley got back to block. Clinton now go into the quarter-finals to play St Drostans.

Bellslea had home advantage over New Deer and it was the visitors who took the lead with a goal from Peter Stewart, Bellslea were level before half time and went on to seal their place in the quarter finals after scoring three goals in the last seven minutes.

Rosehearty Thistle were due to play St Drostans. The away side were awarded the match and now face an away tie against Clinton Thistle.
