Buchan Tennis League ready to hit the courts in 2015
The Buchan Tennis League is alive and hitting the courts in 2015.
The BTLA starts the season off with a floodlit tournament. This first gathering will be on the night of Friday, May 8, at 6.30pm for a 7pm start at LongsideTennis Club to which members of all the clubs involved in the league are invited.
This year there are six tennis clubs in the Buchan area involved in the BTLA (Buchan Tennis League Association) in the planned league and tournaments. Organised to give local clubs an opportunity to play tennis in Sunday afternoon social matches, the BTLA has been in been in operation for several decades.
While there have been stronger years in the past in which there were two leagues, this year will see one league involving six teams - Cullen, Ellon, Longside, Oldmeldrum, Turriff and Oldmeldrum Tennis clubs. Each team plays the five other teams during the months of May and June.
The teams consist of two ladies and two men who play against the opposition in four matches - a ladies’ doubles, men’s doubles and two mixed doubles. The host team provides teas following the matches.
A League Challenge Championship will take place in July in the form of a knockout tournament at the conclusion of the league matches.
Clubs are ranked as seeds based on their final position in the league. The season ends with junior and senior tournaments in August. The Men’s Doubles will be on Sunday, August 9, in Longside while Turriff will host the Ladies’ Doubles on August 18.
The Mixed Doubles will be held at Cullen Tennis Club on August 23. On August 30, the Ladies’ Singles will take place at Udny Tennis Club and Ellon will host the Men’s Singles.
Junior members of each club will be invited to play at Udny Tennis Club on Saturday August22.There will be tournaments for Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16s both singles and doubles matches. The final gathering for the 2015 season is an Annual Awards Night and Ceilidh usually held in October.
Last year the venue was Longside Church Hall with the Longside Ceilidh band providing the music. This year’s venue will be announced after the first gathering of the season - the Floodlit Tournament .
It is through the club teams playing in league matches, whether it be the Buchan League or the Aberdeen and District League organised by the North East Tennis Association (NESTLA) or both, that clubs survive and grow.
Buchan Tennis League is always hopeful that any tennis clubs or tennis players who would like to be involved with the BTLA would make contact with one of the office bearers: Brenda Sutherland (Cruden Bay/Longside) Helen Bryce (Longside) Ann Overton (Udny) or Mark Gartly (Turriff).
