Aberdeenshire Council celebrated Tartan Day (April 6) with the launch of a new guide for businesses wishing to make use of the area’s official tartan.
The Aberdeenshire Tartan: Home Colours was created by Banff-born Donna Wilson, an internationally-acclaimed textile designer, in partnership with the council and local school pupils.
The tartan draws inspiration from landmarks such as the infamous Aunt Betty’s sweet shop in Stonehaven and the Glen Garioch distillery as well as the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside.
The design was developed for use by the Aberdeenshire community and businesses, crafters and other interested parties now have the chance to look at how to incorporate the tartan in their work.
A brochure highlighting the story behind the project and the opportunities available has been launched at one of the tartan’s early adopters, Mitchells Dairy in Inverurie.
The well-known business has incorporated the bright material by having its very own tartan pelmets produced which hang in the windows of the shop and tearoom. Their popular mascot, Moorial the Coo, has also been taking part in the Tartan Day celebrations, sporting her very own, custom-made Aberdeenshire Tartan: Home Colours rosette.
The Provost of Aberdeenshire, Jill Webster, hopes other Aberdeenshire entrepreneurs will have similarly creative ideas.
“The tartan lends itself to a wide variety of uses and we hope that it will be embraced by businesses across Aberdeenshire,” she said.
“So far we’ve seen ties, bowties, scarves and even a kilt produced using the tartan. We’ve also had a wingback armchair upholstered to provide inspiration for its use as design material.”
Co-owner of Mitchell’s Dairy, Keith Whyte, said: “The Aberdeenshire Tartan: Home Colours pelmets that hang in our tearoom are a wonderful talking point and our customers are always asking about how its colours were chosen. The tartan is an excellent way of drawing the whole of the Aberdeenshire community together and I hope other businesses see just how inspiring it is.”
