Scores of people turned out to learn how much the Blue Toon has raised for this year’s Relay For Life appeal at an event in Peterhead recently.

Around 70 team members, survivors, volunteers and sponsors attended the special event at Buchanhaven Hearts Club to hear the announcement that £147,400 had been raised during the seventh annual fundraiser.

Following the announcement, organisers described Peterhead’s effort as the most successful annual Relay For Life in the country.

Peterhead is the only Relay in the UK to have raised over £100,000 four years in a row, raising over £650,000 for Cancer Research UK over the last seven years. Peterhead also smashed the record for the highest average raised per team in the UK, which now stands at just over £12,200.

In Peterhead, 12 teams took part in the Relay For Life, held on July 7 and 8 at Catto Park.

Event chair Angie Shearer, said: “These achievements are down to the hard work and dedication of all our teams, survivors, volunteers, sponsors and the community.

“When we find those cures, it will be thanks to all those people in this amazing community that have come together to support this cause.

“It has been a true team effort by everyone involved in the community and thanks must go to the sponsors - Total, Asco, Labtech, Waves Radio and Huntly Vehicle Care Centre - and to everyone who gave donations to support their local relay.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better end to the amazing seven years my committee and I have organised this incredible event in Peterhead.

“The total is mind blowing. To raise over £100,000 once again is such an astonishing achievement with only 12 teams.

“It has been a pleasure to have been event chair for Relay For Life Peterhead and I feel honoured to have met so many inspirational people,” she added.

Next year’s Relay For Life will be organised by a new committee and will take place on July 6-7, 2013.
