Peterhead Probus celebrates the Bard’s birthday

President Sandy Corner welcomed some fifty members and guests to the annual Burns Lunch held on Tuesday, January 25 at Peterhead’s Palace Hotel.

Sandy welcomed the two principal guests Mrs Laura Greig and Mrs Isobel Robertson who are both retired head teachers.

The Selkirk Grace was given by Mr Jim Grubb and the haggis was piped in with due ceremony. The address was given by Mrs Isobel Robertson who made an excellent job of despatching the beast.

The company then enjoyed an excellent lunch served expertly by the Palace Hotel staff.

The Immortal Memory was shared by Mrs Laura Greig and Mrs Robertson who very ably gave a woman’s perspective to the memory of our National Bard. Both their contributions were amusing, informative and most definitely enjoyed by the assembled company. The adage that the essence of a good Burns Supper is enjoyment was most certainly achieved.

A light-hearted competition was then held where those present had to match the first line of several of Burns Poems to the second line which was provided.

The prize was won by Mrs Bunty Penny who displayed a first class knowledge of the subject.

President Sandy gave the vote of thanks to all who took part in a very enjoyable event.

The next meeting of Probus will take place on Tuesday, February 8, at the usual time of 10.00 for 10.30am when Rev. Roger Neilson will be showing slides of his recent Far Eastern Adventures. As always members and guests will be most welcome.
