Instigated by the Royal British Legion (RBLS) a committee of 10 people from the organisation within the New Deer community was formed to organise events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The local Sewing Group has knitted and crocheted 200 poppies to be used for commemoration display purposes and will also be put on sale.

A supply of poppy seeds has been obtained for planting around local villages or the countryside and volunteers willing to help to do this would be appreciated.

The group have organised a number of events to tie in with the commemorations including a WW1 Commemorative Dinner Dance that will be held on Saturday, March 21.

This event will be held within the RBLS New Deer Clubroom.

A two course meal will be served offering a war time menu and appropriate dress for that period is requested. This will be a ticket event.

A Painting and Poetry Competition has also been organised.

This is an open competition and has been divided into three groups: Primary School, Secondary School and Adult.

All paintings, drawings or poems must have a wartime theme.

Further details of this competition can be obtained from the RBLS New Deer and District Branch or Committee members.

A display of memorabilia relevant to the 1st World War will be held in New Deer Public Hall on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 April.

The Commemorations will finish with a trip to Belgium departing on Sunday, May 24.

There are 32 legion members going on this trip and they will be visiting the war graves.

Wreaths and crosses have been purchased to place on the graves there.
