Peterhead Academy pupils Ewan Birnie and Jordan Taylor received their RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) certificates at the recent meeting of the town’s Rotary Club.
Ewan and Jordan attended the Peterhead club’s meeting last Tuesday to speak about their exploits on the week’s adventure and leadership course at Nethybridge and both were extremely enthusiastic about the experience.
RYLA is a Rotary International programme for young people fully supported by Rotary District 1010, which includes the Peterhead Club.
It offers young people a special opportunity to take part in developing qualities of leadership, team working, initiative and problem solving at the start of their careers.
The week-long course is spent on team building, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, hill walking, etc
This develops a more complete personality and the new found confidence and skills are brought back into the community and demonstrated to their sponsoring clubs, by way of a short presentation on their experiences as a precursor to receiving a certificate.
The course takes place at the Abernethy Centre, Nethybridge and one mentor works with each group to assist the staff instructors.
The course, one week for boys and another for girls from 15 to almost 18, is also designed to develop the latent talents of anyone held back by lack of confidence.
Candidates must be prepared to contribute to as well as benefit from the course and preference will be given to those who would not otherwise get the opportunity to take part.
