A woman living in Peterhead has raised over £3,000 for a cancer research charity after losing a close friend to the disease.

Heila Thomson, originally from Brazil, raised money for Cancer Research UK by hosting a James Bond Night at the Buchanhaven Hearts Social Club on Saturday, June 4.

The 007 night was the third fundraising event that Heila has held for the charity since September 2014 after the death of her friend.

Heila raised £1,800 in her first two events for Cancer Research UK and her latest fundraiser brought in a further £1,200 for the charity bringing the total amount raised to £3,000 in under two years.

Daniella Carpenter, one of Cancer Research UK’s senior fundraising executives, said: “We can’t thank Helia enough for her continued support through the different events and activities she takes on.

“She gives up so much of her time pulling these fantastic events together and raises vital funds for our research as well as awareness of cancer and our charity in her local community.”

The cancer charity also thanked the band The Colours and photographer Bob Stephen and everyone else who had helped Heila with the events.

Helia will be continuing her fundraising success later in 2016 with a sponsored hair cut, and has plans to hold a Hollywood night in June 2017.

Cancer Research UK currently funds two research projects at the University of Aberdeen with people in and around Aberdeen taking part in over 50 clinical trials.
