The Thompson clan - led by team captain Angie Shearer - are regulars in Relay for Life Peterhead.

The Thompson Clan is led by team captain Angie Shearer and is made up of her family and friends, mainly from the Aberdeenshire area.

Angie’s fundraising began after her Granny Thompson died in 2000 of cancer.

Her team entered the first ever Relay For Life in Aberdeen in 2001 at the Chris Anderson Stadium in Aberdeen, and from that time onwards they have fundraised for Cancer Research UK

The team started fundraising 20 years ago in memory of Granny Thompson who died from cancer.

Cancer Research UK organised the event from 2001 to 2004, and Angie took over as event chair in 2005. In 2006 the Relay had to be switched to the Lord Catto Park in Peterhead, with Angie continuing as chair until 2012.

Their fundraising has been tremendous. They have done various fundraisers including bag-packs, ceilidhs, sales and The Twilight walk, with Angie organising the Twilight Walk in Inverurie in 2010 to mark the 10th anniversary of her Granny’s death.

Angie said: “Twenty years ago we would have never imagined raising £1 million as a family.

"We just wanted to fundraise to help beat cancer, but as the years have gone on, we have got closer to raising £1 million.

The fundraising is continuing, with the next generation of the Thompson clan getting involved in various events.

"It has been incredible to actually achieve this milestone.

"It makes it even more special this year because not only has it been 20 years since I first took part in Relay For Life in memory of my Granny Thompson, we also lost my Granda Thompson to cancer in June 2020.

"It has been really special to hit the million this year in memory of him, along with my Granny, my Auntie Sandra and Uncle Ian.

"We know with Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research, the money is making a difference and we can beat cancer with amazing communities coming together, like Relay For Life Peterhead and the Twilight Walk in Inverurie.

"Special thanks to everyone who has joined us virtually in the 10/10/10 challenge and the 100km challenge which has helped us reach the £1 million milestone!”

Angie, has a faithful group of volunteers who have helped her with the event over the years, registering participants, marshalling the route and handing out much-needed hot drinks and cakes at the end.

Most are friends and family and have been involved from the start.

Vikki Merrilees, from Cancer Research UK said: ‘We are so grateful to Angie and the wider Thompson family for everything they have done for Cancer Research UK over the years.

"For a single family to raise £1 million is phenomenal!”

Relay For Life Peterhead’s chair Lorraine Coleman and the vice chair Joyce Cameron also praised the Thompson clan.

They said: “One team, raising £1 million, is mind-blowing! Thank you so, so much!

"Everyone at Relay For Life Peterhead is so proud to have them in our Relay. We are so inspired by their dedication to fundraising and by their very modest and lovely manner. They really are an amazing team.

“The Thompson Clan – you are Simply the Best!”
