Asda customers have been generously supporting the Peterhead and Fraserburgh Gift Tree Food Appeal.

One of the most important initiatives of its kind in the North-east, the Gift Tree provides local families and individuals across Buchan with a little bit of extra support during the festive period.

In its first year of providing foodstuffs in 2014, a total of 285 hampers were produced for the Peterhead and Fraserburgh area which met the demand of the referral numbers and fed 1,064 people with just under 4,300 meals.

Ken Duncan of Peterhead Projects’ Here for You Partnership, which is helping to co-ordinate the appeal, said: “On behalf of everyone associated with the Gift Tree I would like to thank Asda manager Grant McHardy, community colleague Lorna Cruickshank and all store staff for their support with this initiative.

“Likewise, the fantastic backing we have received from customers on launch day is really heartening and a big thank-you goes out to everyone who has made donations so far and to our volunteer helpers form Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action and NHS Grampian.

“Our food drive across Buchan will run until mid-December and we would encourage local businesses, schools, churches and community groups to get involved in supporting the Gift Tree Appeal.”

There are a number of ways the community can support the initiative – by hosting a Christmas gift tree itself to collect gifts for children and young adults, or by making a food collection to help bolster the food hamper appeal.
