North East MSP Christian Allard has praised the Albert Hotel in Peterhead for bringing in a new stock of alcohol-free drinks following the introduction of the new lower drink-drive limit.

Mr Allard, who is on the Scottish Parliament’s Justice Committee which scrutinised the drink-drive legislation, has written to Terry Moran at the Queen Street hotel praising her for taking the opportunity to introduce new products to the menu.

Speaking to the Buchan Observer last month, Ms Moran said she had noticed that less people were taking alcoholic drinks with their meals and designated drivers were not drinking at all since the introduction of the new legislation.

In response, the Peterhead hotelier decided to introduce non-alcoholic beverages to the menu.

Police Scotland’s figures revealed the number of people caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray fell by over 23% during the festive period.

Commenting on the Albert Hotel’s initiative, Mr Allard said:“I am pleased that the Albert Hotel has taken the opportunity presented by the lower drink-drive limit to introduce alcohol-free drinks.

“It is clear from both police figures and Terry Moran’s account that people are more aware than ever of the risks of drink-driving.

“The Albert Hotel choosing to provide alcohol-free drinks is a fantastic, positive response that will benefit the business and help keep our roads safe.

“I would encourage other businesses to follow suit,” he added.
