A toast to the Bard of Avon at annual Aden-een spectacular

A cornucopia of Shakespearean delight is how Aden-een is being billed this year!

As 2016 is the Bard of Avon’s 400th anniversary, this year’s event will fill the Aden estate woods in Mintlaw with the characters and scenes inspired by Britain’s greatest playwright.

Modo development worker Theresa Ritchie said: “We’re inviting people to join this celebration of culture and community in the beautiful surrounds of Aden Country Park.

“It will see young people – bursting with energy and enthusiasm – create an extravaganza of delight.”

Now in its eighth year, Aden-een: the Shell Fireworks Parade brings together and engages hundreds of participants from across Aberdeenshire.

The event gives young people the chance to show off a range of skills as they create routines, props and performances for the big day.

Aden-een is a youth regeneration project led by Modo, in partnership with Shell, Aden Country Park, Buchan Development Parternership, Community Planning Partners and Aberdeenshire Council.

Theatre Modo was formed in 1995. Initially its work was divided between professional theatre and youth and community projects.

Over time its passion for engaging and rewarding activities for young people became the core activity.

After years in the Highlands and Glasgow, Modo started to work in North East Scotland in 2007.

The success of this led to the company setting up a permanent base in Peterhead in 2013 and relocating to Aberdeenshire fully in 2014.

Theresa said: “Over the years, the project has helped people into jobs, training and college courses.

“It has encouraged hundreds of young people to engage in something positive and to gain accreditation for their achievements.”

Modo: Circus with Purpose delivers one off circus skills workshops, long term programmes and large scale community extravaganzas every year.

But, arguably, Aden-een is one of the most anticipated events on the calendar.

Taking part this year are drama groups from Fraserburgh, Mintlaw and Peterhead Academy, as well as performances from Peterhead Youth Theatre, Lawrence Dance Academy, Mutiny Tribal Belly Dancers, Alberto’s Commedia dell’Arte groups, Serena Wilson School of Dance and Aberdeen Fire Spinners.

There will also be performers from CircoModo Fraserburgh, Mintlaw and Peterhead.

In the courtyard this year there will be fantastic performances from local theatre group Red Brick and the colourful Guarana Street Drummers.

Theresa said: “The transformation of the park will begin a few days before with the Modo technical crew turning the park into a mysterious and magical Shakespearean world for one night only.

“A huge amount of planning and hard work is involved backstage in order for the event to be both spectacular and safe.”

As well as entertainment, the Courtyard is THE place to recharge and warm up.

Friends of Aden will be offering tea, coffee, hot chocolate, crisps and biscuits, while the Café at Aden will serve up hot meals as well as coffee, tea and cakes. The Aden Craft and Gift Shop will be open for business too.

This year there will be one walk through the woods, taking visitors over the bridge, across the river and down to the Arboretum where a variety of groups will perform.

The walk is one-way only, with the queue forming at the side of Mansion House. It will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and 8pm to 9pm.

Fireworks will start at 7.45pm, with a viewing area in front of Mansion House. The exclusion zone will be clearly mapped and monitored by security.

Theresa added: “Dragonfire will once again thrill the crowds with their spectacular display.

“However, it is essential that the audience co-operates with safety measures.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service, Modo crew and volunteer marshalls will all be on hand to ensure the public’s safety.

Visitors are advised to wrap up warmly, wear sensible shoes and take a torch if they’re scared of the dark! Fancy dress is optional but while the event is family friendly it is not recommended for under fives. Please note, no dogs or alcohol are permitted.
