Local Trading Standards issue advice

Aberdeenshire Council Trading Standards are warning homeowners to think twice before employing doorstep callers who may be offering building, driveway or gardening services.

Trading Standards are receiving complaints from local consumers who have agreed for work to be carried out by doorstep callers and then find the work is of poor quality.

By employing a doorstop trader, homeowners have little assurance of the skills of the workmen and will not know the true identity of the business.

If things go wrong there may be nobody to complain to or claim compensation from.

Rogue traders, who are often not locally based, frequently over price the work or even increase the price after the work has started.

Trading standards have also received complaints where the trader has started work in order to try and bully them into agreeing to the job.

Rogue traders have been linked to various types of doorstep crime such as distraction, burglary and theft.

Criminals have also been known to steal money from inside the home or tools from sheds and garages.

Homeowners should never allow anyone in their home unless they know and trust them.

Tips to avoid falling victim to rogue traders include avoiding employing doorstep callers, obtain several quotes to ensure the work needs doing and the price is reasonable, do some research on a business beforehand and don’t be pressurised into employing a trader.

For further advice or to report rogue traders contact Trading Standards on 08454 040506 or in an emergency contact Police Scotland on 101 or 999.
