PLANS to build 18 homes on the site of a former Buchan care home have been submitted to Aberdeenshire Council.

Ellon-based JKR Contractors has lodged a planning application seeking consent for the development on the site of the St. Drostan’s home in Russell Street, Old Deer.

Agent for the developers, Ken Mathieson, told the Buchanie: “There will be a mix of homes, both flats and houses.

“The plan is for two-bed flats, three-bed semi-detached and four-bed detached homes. We have taken into consideration the trees on the site and will be building accordingly with a tree management plan.

“Depending on planning consent, the development shouldn’t take too long, with the homes being built in one phase,” he added.

St. Drostan’s care home closed in September 2007 after councillors agreed it was no longer financially viable and declared it surplus to requirements.

The building was subsequently put on the market in its current form or as a redevelopment opportunity. The council previously suggested it be knocked down and replaced with up to 20 homes.
