A Cruden Bay student is celebrating her success after securing a degree in Social Work from Robert Gordon University (RGU).
Karen Rendall (52), graduated with a BA (Hons) Social Work at His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday July 16, just weeks after securing a job as a care manager with Aberdeenshire Council.
Karen, who previously never had any inclination of going into higher education, was attracted to the course as she wanted to challenge herself and help others.
The former Forres Academy pupil said: “I got a job in a care home which I absolutely loved however I wanted to progress, I took a look at my life and thought I could do more with it.
“All my children apart from one were up and working which made it easier to make this decision.”
Originally, Karen attended an access course for Social Sciences at Fraserburgh College, before completing a HND.
She said: “I did an access course as I wasn’t even sure if I had the ability to study.
“To my surprise, I passed with flying colours and went on to complete my HNC and HND in Social Sciences,” she said.
Karen was unsure if university was for her or not, however she was determined to reach her goal and applied to RGU.
She added: “This has been a life changing experience for me and one I will never forget, it has been one of the hardest most stressful roads I have gone down but also one of the best.”
