Pupils from Peterhead and Mintlaw Academies took a deep dive into the subsea sector recently as part of OPITO’s Energise Your Future initiative held during Subsea Expo at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

The event, held on Friday, February 5, was open to pupils aged from as young as 13 for the first time.

Around 250 pupils from schools across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Fife attended the industry exhibition and met with personnel at 20 exhibiting companies involved in OPITO’s interactive programme.

The pupils aged between 13 and 17 years old were involved in different activities at the stands, whilst learning about the diverse range of career opportunities available within the industry.

OPITO believes that targeting a younger age group will help the next generation to make informed decisions throughout their education.

Now in its eighth year, Energise Your Future saw the pupils meeting up with a broad spectrum of subsea supply chain companies including Aker Solutions, DNV GL, IQARUS, AISUS Offshore and the National Hyberbaric Centre amongst others.

Participating companies provided interactive activities for the youngsters to gain hands on experience including piloting an ROV at Ac-cess, testing response skills at BEL Valves and a demonstration of pipeline integrity and fatigue at DNV GL.

OPITO UK managing director John McDonald said: “The Energise Your Future event at Subsea Expo provided stimulating and interesting practical experiences for the pupils and hopefully gave them an insight as to how the different aspects of the industry pulls together.

“Nothing beats being able to speak with the people who are already working at the companies you aspire to.

“The pupils were be able to discuss anything from future subject choices, entry routes into the industry and what working life involves within each business.”

John Morrison, technical sales at participating company Ac-cess added: “It’s so important that we work to bring the next generation into engineering and technology.

“Participating in Energise Your Future is a great way of doing so and we are thrilled to be involved.

“It’s great to see so many youngsters involved and hopefully this kind of initiative goes a long way to providing the talent we need in the future.”

Energise Your Future is now in its eighth year and OPITO has connected over 11,000 young people to the oil industry thus far.
