Matthew is Young Musician of the Year

Mintlaw Academy held its popular Young Musician of the Year competition recently.

The well-attended event was organised by the academy’s head of music, Mr Gayle, and sponsored once again by the Rotary Club of Central Buchan.

Adjudicator for this year’s competition was Ian Milne.

Prizes to the three winners were presented by Central Buchan Rotary Club members Moira Coutts and Helen Kelly.

At the start of the evening, Mr Gayle thanked the parents and the tutors for their continued support.

He also applauded the effort and commitment put in by the young musicians both in their playing and to the music department as a whole.

Moira Coutts, who was a a founder member of Central Buchan Rotary, told the gathering: “I am very impressed by the depth of talent we have witnessed here tonight.

“The Rotary Club of Central Buchan is proud to be associated with Mintlaw Academy and its music department.

“It is very apparent that a huge amount of effort and practice has been applied by the pupils for this competition, making this evening very enjoyable indeed.

“I sincerely hope that the young musicians continue in their musical endeavours.”

Taking the top spot in this year’s event was young pianist Matthew Henderson, with second place going to Frances Bugden on the tenor saxaphone.

In third place was young trumpeter Shona Brown.

A total of eight young musicians battled it out in this year’s event.
