Central School pupils were among a number of volunteers to help with the planting of hundreds of flowers at Peterhead’s Landale Road gardens recently.
One class of budding young gardeners initially helped plant up the large circular border with marigolds before another planted a range of flowers in one of the triangular beds.
Primary 5 teacher Liam Gray said: “There were 21 pupils in primary 5 on Friday, June 12 at the gardens and all the pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
“They enjoyed helping in the morning and were very keen that they got to go back in the afternoon too. The children were very excited to be working outdoors on a community project and are looking forward to helping again.”
The school followed up that planting exercise with a visit on Thursday, June 25 when 16 pupils accompanied by primary 5/6 teacher Mrs Skinner completed another of the flower beds.
Assisting the pupils were three dedicated volunteers in the shape of Dean, Dylan and Sarah who put in a power of work during the bulk of the planting which was blessed with sunshine over three days.
So hot was the weather, in fact, that an appeal had to go out to Peterhead’s firefighting crew who rallied round to give the newly-planted blooms a good drenching!
The Here For You Partnership, which is again co-ordinating the planting and seasonal maintenance of the gardens, was delighted with the volunteer response and looking forward to ongoing support throughout the summer.
Here For You’s Ken Duncan said: “Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers in recent weeks and the selection of flowers we received courtesy of Aberdeenshire Council’s nursery at Aden Park, I am sure the gardens will look positively stunning this summer.
“It was heart-warming to see the enthusiasm of all our helpers and I would encourage everyone keen to support the gardens by way of weeding and some general maintenance to get in touch with me.”
And it wasn’t just planting help in evidence at Landale – Peterhead Academy kindly-gifted three picnic benches for visitors to use, while Hatton Area Residents Association’s community tool library generously-donated a selection of tools for use in the gardens.
“It just goes to show community spirit is alive and kicking in our area and I would like to thank all those who have supported the Landale Road gardens project in any way,” said Ken.
