THE PE department at Peterhead Academy has received a grant from the National Lottery.
The £1,842 grant from the Lottery Fund’s 2014 Communities fund will enable 12 fifth and sixth year pupils to complete the Sports Leaders award programme.
The nationally recognised award helps school pupils develop essential life skills such as organisation, motivation, communication and working with others.
PE teacher Gillian McDermott says the pupils will build these skills by playing basketball and teaching the sport to nursery and primary school pupils.
She said: “The senior pupils have really been taking an interest in basketball recently so the grant is really positive as it hones in on the enthusiasm developing for the sport.”
Pupils have been taking part in a Scottish Sporting Futures initiative called Twilight Basketball on Friday evenings at Peterhead Community Centre.
Ms McDermott hopes to put together a school basketball team in the near future and hopes that girls as well as boys will get involved.
Banffshire & Buchan Coast MSP Stewart Stevenson said: “This funding will provide fantastic new opportunities for people in Peterhead and I know that everyone involved in successfully securing this funding will be delighted by their success.“
