A HOMELESS man who froze to death on a Buchan beach was wanted by police in connection with a robbery, it emerged last week.

The body of Barry Cannon was discovered on rocks at Gadle Braes in Peterhead, on December 5, where it is believed he was hiding from police.

Cannon’s co-accused Matthew Anderson (39) was jailed for 10 months last week for his part in the robbery at an RS McColl store in Peterhead’s Meethill Road in June.

The owner became suspicious after seeing Cannon and Anderson looking into the window of a closed cafe. When the pair entered the shop, which also has a post office counter, Cannon asked a shop assistant for a box of matches.

David Thorburn, prosecuting, said: “The accused lent across the counter and put his hand into the till. The shop assistant attempted to close the drawer but he managed to get a handful of money, in various notes, before running towards the exit.”

The two accused were identified from CCTV footage, which clearly showed Anderson taking the money, thought to be about £175. Anderson had broken a previous bail condition which prevented him from leaving an address at the town’s Leask Avenue between 7pm and 7am. Iain Jane, defending, said that Anderson had previously managed to overcome a serious drug problem but had fallen in with a “negative peer group” early in 2011. It is understood that Cannon had been staying with Anderson at Leask Avenue.
